Being a researcher in engineering is one of the easiest ways to start a company based directly on your own research. For eg. from University of Cambridge, they provide a lot of funding and support if we want to start a company. If I have invented something new (let’s say a new type of a supercapacitor), then the first thing I have to do is to protect that invention so that no one else can make, use, sell or import my invention without my permission. Then I can start my own company and commercialize/sell my invention or I can give permission to an already existing company to commercialize/sell my invention and ask them to give me money. Personally I do not like to start my own company as I do not want to be that busy and also it is a bit risky. So, I sold one of my inventions to a company who wanted to buy it.

At the moment this is not my ambition. I like working for RWE and am happy to continue doing this for now.
